PROJECT PHASES

The project will be built in four (4) phases, with completion expected in 2025. Please note that all construction phases are weather permitting and subject to change. Construction began on March 16, 2020.

 

During each phase, crews will:

  • Remove existing roadway, curb and gutter, and sidewalks
  • Reinstall or rehabilitate the roadway to correct cracks and potholes
  • Install new sidewalks that are ADA-compliant
  • Install new medians and landscaping
  • Install crosswalks in some areas

 

Work hours will initially be 7 a.m.-5 p.m., subject to change as days are longer. Some work may be done at night. Some existing left-hand turns will be eliminated to keep traffic flowing. Also, crews will not be working on feast days, holidays and other events such as Taos Pride and the Big Dance Festival.

  • Phase 1 - Completed
  • Phase 2 - Completed
  • Phase 3 – Crews will begin work in May of 2024 and finish in 2024 or 2025.
  • Phase 4 – Will immediately follow Phase 3. Crews to begin work in 2025.

Phase 1: Completed

NM 68 Paseo del Pueblo from La Posta Road/Cervantes Drive intersection to Tewa Street/Albright Street Intersection

Reconstruct 4-lane road and demolish the old Scheid Motors building on Los Pandos

Construction is planned in this order:

  • Inside lanes of NM 68 (median will be closed)
  • Intersection of Cervantes and NM 68
  • Southbound driving lanes of NM 68
  • SW Quadrant of Tewa/Albright intersection
  • NW Quadrant of Tewa/Albright intersection
  • Storm drainage at Taolne and Sipapu Intersection
  • Northbound driving lanes of NM 68
  • NE Quadrant of Cervantes Drive and NM 68
  • SE Quadrant of Cervantes Drive and NM 68
  • NE Quadrant of Tewa/Albright intersection
  • SE Quadrant of Tewa/Albright intersection
  • Adding new traffic signal at Camino del Paseo Pueblo Norte and Albright Street

Phase 2: Completed

Completion scheduled in Fall 2023.

NM 68 Paseo del Pueblo from Tewa Street/Albright Road intersection to Camino Placita/Quesnel Road

Rehabilitate 2-lane road into a 4-lane road

Construction is planned in this order:

  • Inside lanes (median will be closed) to construct storm drainage pipeline
  • Northbound driving lanes
  • South portion of Los Pandos
  • North portion of Los Pandos
  • Southbound driving lanes
  • NW quadrant of NM 68 & Siler Road
  • SW quadrant of NM 68 & Siler Road
  • Realignment of the Siler Road/Paseo del Pueblo intersection
  • SW quadrant of Camino Placita/Quesnel Road
  • NW quadrant of Camino Placita/Quesdel Road

Phase 3: Spring 2024

Crews will begin work in May of 2024 and are expected to finish in 2024 or 2025.

NM 68/US 64 Paseo del Pueblo north of Quesnel Road to Civic Plaza Drive intersection

Reconstruct 2-lane roadway, add new right-turn lane from Paseo del Pueblo to Kit Carson Road with a new median to accommodate eastbound-turning traffic, and add a median on North Plaza for traffic turning right onto Paseo del Pueblo.

Construction is planned in this order:

  • Southbound lane
  • Northbound lane
  • West portion of sidewalk, and curb and gutter
  • SW quadrant of US 64/NM 68
  • NW quadrant of US 64/NM 68
  • West portion of NM 68
  • East portion of NM 68
  • Northern half of Quesnel Road
  • SE quadrant of NM 68/US 64
  • NE quadrant of NM 68/US 64

A winter suspension will take place in December 2023, with construction scheduled to resume in April 2024.

Phase 4: 2025

Will immediately follow Phase 3. Crews to begin work in 2025.

US 64 Civic Plaza Drive to just north of Camino de la Placita

Rehabilitate 2-lane roadway, add right-hand turn lane for northbound traffic to merge onto Camino del Paseo Pueblo north and add a traffic signal at Camino del Paseo Pueblo Norte at the Veterans Highway turnoff to Taos Pueblo.

Construction is planned in this order:

  • The western portion of US 64
  • The SW quadrant of the Civic Plaza Drive/US 64
  • The NW quadrant of Civic Plaza Drive/US 64
  • The SW quadrant of Camino de La Placitas/US 64

Construction will continue in this order:

  • The eastern portion of US 64
  • The left half of Camino Paseo del Pueblo Norte
  • The right half of Camino Paseo del Pueblo Notre
  • Installation of the new traffic signal at Camino del Paseo Pueblo Norte

Note: Final construction activities such as painting, striping and installation of landscaping are tentatively scheduled to occur in late 2024.
